Keypad Questions
Q. What is the NeoKeys interface?
A. The NeoKeys interface is a proprietary design that works identically whether it is implemented as software on a touchscreen or in a physical key format as a keypad. It consists of a set of keys and screens that allows you to input text and commands for any device anywhere, incredibly easily. It makes your technology easy to use.
The NeoKeys Launcher is a replacement for all the different user interface systems (buttons, keys, graffiti, touchscreen software and mice) systems that are out there on all the different electronic devices.
Q. Why is it so easy to use?
A. Because the design incorporates a very large number of critical features that make it easy. We worked very hard on this. Each piece adds up to a whole system that is exceptionally easy to use and, at the same time, very powerful.
Q. How do you know?
A. We know for a lot of reasons. We designed it right from the start with the single most important purpose being ease of use. We know how people use technology in their lives, and how to design technology so that it is easy to use.
We also know because we have run usability testing. People learn to use the NeoKeys interface on sight with no training and no manuals! And they use it very well right away. It is truly an intuitive system.
Q. How do you use the Keypad?
A. It is as easy as 1-2-3. You choose the application you want by pushing a right hand button. The keypad re-sets itself automatically to that application. You enter whatever commands and text you want until you want to select a new application. That's it.
Within an application, you can choose different levels by pushing a left-hand column key. The middle 3x4 array are your entry keys. They always re-set to match your specific choice of right and left hand column keys.
Also, the keys always tell you exactly what they do at that time. You never have to guess. You never have to memorize settings. It is always spelled out for you clearly right above each key. That makes it incredibly easy, and gives you easy access to the full range of commands for any device or any application.
Q. What fingers do you use?
A. You can use whatever fingers make it easiest for you. You can use just your index finger, or you can use your thumbs. But the NeoKeys interface has been designed so that you can use all the fingers of one hand. If you do it that way, and it is very easy to learn, then you will be fastest.
Q. What if you are left-handed?
A. The NeoKeys interface is symmetrical around the vertical axis, so it can be reversed for left handers by a software setting, but is easy for them even without reversing the format.
Q. How do you use the NeoKeys interface in foreign languages?
A. Foreign languages are as easy as English text. In fact, the NeoKeys interface is optimized for all languages. You never need an overlay or pull-down menus or to look up symbols. Each language you want has a full set of letters right with the keys. In fact, you can change all the labels of the keypad screens to show up in whatever language you want. And you can switch easily between typing in one language and then a different language, with one click.
Q. How do you use the NeoKeys interface for Asian character-based languages?
A. Asian character-based languages have historically posed a huge challenge to keyboards. Current systems offer a horrible mix of overlays and pull-down menus and predictive software.
The NeoKeys interface offers the user a choice of entering characters in whole, essentially the way current systems work.
But an extraordinary advance offered by the NeoKeys interface is that it allows characters to be efficiently and quickly written brushstroke by brushstroke, just the way children are taught to write in school on a blank sheet of paper. This allows a user to write directly in his/her language with no intermediate steps, and gives the user the ability to write every one of the thousands of characters using just a few key presses.
We've moved way beyond the need for typing a romanization phonetic spelling of the character in order to choose from a list of whole characters.
Our brushstrokes are based on a categorization scheme that is well-recognized, and gives the user an incredible level of control over the characters he/she is writing.
The NeoKeys interface offers an intuitive, fast, simple system that works directly in character-based languages.
Q. What is a "mobile? wireless keypad"
A. More and more standard PC keyboards and mice are wireless. But they are still designed so that must be used on your desk. That is wireless, but it is NOT mobile.
The NeoKeys interface implemented as a separate keypad is wireless and mobile. You can use your PC or laptop walking around your office, or leaning back in your airplane seat or your conference room chair. You can use your PC from across your bedroom or family room. You have all the functionality of the standard PC keyboard and mouse in our keypad that fits in the palm of your hand!
That's a mobile, wireless keypad, and it fits your lifestyle. You are not chained to your desk or within inches of your laptop. You use your technology how and where YOU want.
Q. What do you mean by "Text and Commands"?
A. We mean that you have to enter lots more than just text to use your cell phone and other computing devices. In fact, much of what you enter is not text at all. You enter commands to use your voicemail, or increase the volume or start an application or when you are playing a game, etc.
So to really design an easy to use keypad, you have to make it easy to enter both text (in any language) and commands.
If it is still hard to enter commands, then you have not really provided a complete solution to the consumer. For instance, if you make text easy, but a user still has to remember some strange code to access, or skip or replay voicemail, then you haven't given the consumer a truly effective solution.
Further, more and more of what people like to input as "text" is really symbols. We enable easy entry of any symbol. A user will have access to a set of symbols and will be able to download a whole range of other symbols, just like downloading ring tones. Text messaging becomes much more personal and interesting.
And, the keypad can enter anything else. For instance, musical notes are easy to play. It can really function as a full musical instrument keyboard. The only limitation will be the imagination of the user and developer community.
We enable easy and intuitive entry of the full and broadest meaning of "text and commands."
Q. What are the lifestyle benefits?
A. The NeoKeys Launcher matches today's mobile lifestyle. It requires only one hand to use. You can talk on the phone or hold a cup of coffee and reply to email or surf the web at the same time. It is truly mobile. You are not chained to your desk or forced to sit inches from your laptop. You can relax in your airplane seat or conference room chair or anywhere else and use your computer in full, totally easily. It is beautifully designed. It allows you to multi-task, it frees you from the bondage to your computer and it enables you in every use of your cell phone and home entertainment system. It simplifies and empowers. It respects you.
Q. Why won't voice recognition replace keyboards?
A. Mainly because a device that has no keyboard of any kind will be incredibly limited. You can't use voice recognition to run your device at the same time that you are talking to anyone. How can you be on a conference call and type and send an email or compose an instant message if you cannot type them in? How can you use your laptop or other device on an airplane or in a conference room or in a lecture hall or in a room you are sharing with other people if you have to talk out loud to your laptop or other device?
Simply put, voice recognition is coming, but it will never replace the need for an effective key entry system.
Q. What about predictive text entry software?
A. First, if you like predictive text software, it will work even better on the NeoKeys Launcher.
Second, most people do not use it. Predictive text software has many problems that are a pain in the neck for most people. Among others, you are not meant to look at the screen when you type because wrong words will flash up. That is simply the opposite of a good key entry system.
Third, as we discuss above, text is only one element of a truly effective, easy-to-use key entry system. Commands entry is at least as important. We enable both.
Q. What about touchscreen devices?
A. Touchscreen devices present users with the same set of issues that physical key devices present. A touchscreen device still has to be easy to use across all the applications and features and media on the device.
The only real difference is that touchscreen devices allow the user interface to be based purely on software. But that alone does not solve anything, and, in fact, presents the user interface designer with a series of difficult issues since a software user interface can be designed in an almost unlimited number of ways.
In the end, the NeoKeys interface solution's benefits apply to touchscreen and physical key devices identically because we designed the NeoKeys interface INDEPENDENT of a specific device implementation. That's the way to design an optimal user interface. It solves the user's issues, not the device's issues.
Q. Who Benefits from the NeoKeys interface in its various implementations?
A. Everyone benefits:
The consumer
who gets the advantage of all the advanced features, applications and services available on or through the devices without the pain, difficulty, frustration, lost time and lost productivity associated with difficult to use or poorly designed interfaces;
who will save in space allocated to hardware, and save in costs associated with having three substantial pieces of unnecessary hardware (standard PC keyboards, mice and desktop phones);
who will get devices that match their mobile, multi-tasking and entertainment and business-oriented lifestyles; and
who will have less technology that forces them to adapt to it.
Businesses
who will have more productive employees
who will see significant cost savings associated with fewer technical support staff, fewer help desk calls and fewer hardware purchase and maintenance costs
who will realize a much faster and easier method to roll-out new and enhanced applications to their mobile work force
The device manufacturers
who will sell more of advanced devices, which generally sell at a higher price with a higher profit margin, for many reasons, including (1) that visually exciting and new external features are what sell devices, and (2) that the NeoKeys interface aligns the interests of the device manufacturer and the sales people at operator-run retail outlets for mobile phones
who can manufacturer one phone for the global market, and tailor it to each national/language/regional or demographic market by software, instead of hard-labeling keys for specific markets at the time of manufacture
The service providers and network infrastructure companies
who will sell more advanced services, which also generally sell at a premium with a higher margin
who will have the opportunity to expand their revenues to move beyond subscriber-side fees and into click-through and other content-side fees
who will get a higher return on their network investment.
Retailers
who will sell more devices because the keypad offers many of their customers a far superior user interface.
Application Developers
who can make their applications far more interesting and easy to use by coding for the NeoKeys interface in order to fully integrate and customize the keypad with the application's upper screen graphics
Mobile Internet Companies
who gain from having easy access to any website on a mobile device, as well as being able to fully integrate and customize the keypad with their website's upper screen graphics thereby making a far enhanced user experience on their website
Web 2.0 and beyond
which become more of a reality as websites can fully integrate and customize the keypad with each website's upper screen content, services and features
which become more of a reality as the Neokeys interface enables easy personalized whole-Web structuring according to user preferences and experience
